The results are in and we’re excited to announce that Hickson Road Australian Dry Gin from the new Hickson House Distillery in The Rocks has taken out the top spot in our third Bartender Magazine Hottest 100 Aussie Spirits Countdown. Lots of these brands will be on show at the Indie Spirits Tasting at the Potts Point Hotel tomorrow as part of Sydney Bar Week.

This distillery and bar opened back in 2021 from the Barrelhouse Group (Mike Enright & Julian Train), the team behind the likes of The Barber Shop and the Duke of Clarence. The story started years ago, most likely over a pint, when Mikey Enright first talked to Tim Stones, ex-global Beefeater ambassador and previous head distiller at Manly Spirits. Years may have passed between The Barber Shop opening and a fateful, hungover morning at Tales of the Cocktail in 2016, where the two managed to finally sit down at the Ace Hotel and start imagining what they could achieve together. And now they have taken out the top spot in this annual countdown, as voted by you! They now have a $10K marketing budget to spend with us at Australian Bartender.

So how did we get to this Top 10? Earlier this year we put out the call for distilleries to nominate their brands. Then we got you guys to vote. We had thousands of votes roll in and now we have the Top 100 in order.

Hickson Road Australian Dry Gin

Influenced by the traditional London Dry style gin, featuring juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, liquorice root, orange peel, Oolong tea, Australian native thyme, finger lime and aniseed myrtle. Makes for a delicious citrusy martini.

So how did we get to this Top 10? Earlier this year we put out the call for distilleries to nominate their brands. Then we got you guys to vote. We had 8000 votes roll in and we announced the top 100 live on Facebook at 6pm live from Piccolo Bar in Kings Cross.

The countdown is dedicated to recognising the hard work of our many local distilleries around the country. Since launching Indie Spirits Tasting back in 2015 we have watched the Aussie spirits category go from strength to strength and we now boast internationally renowned, top quality hooch across numerous categories.

2021 winner was the Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky, a multi-award winning whisky from Sydney. The team say of their Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky: “It is distinctly crafted to highlight six malts, as opposed to the typical one or two used in most whiskies, each with a unique profile and character. This six-malt mash bill, although incredibly low yielding, provides a significantly richer and more expressive flavour, full of distinct regional character.”

Never Never Distilling Co. Triple Juniper won in 2029.  Sean Baxter, founder of Never Never said of the win: “When we heard we took out the inaugural Hottest 100 Spirits Countdown it was without question one of the most valuable competitions to win. To be even be considered in the top 10 is a massive achievement, as it means the large majority of bartenders and operators who voted consider your brand to be doing all the right things in the industry.”

This year the countdown will be happening at Indie Spirits Tasting Sydney at the Potts Point Hotel on Sunday 4th September during Sydney Bar Week.

The countdown is dedicated to recognising the hard work of our many local distilleries around the country. 2021 winner was the Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky from the local Sydney distillery. 2020 winner, Never Never Distilling Co. Triple Juniper won in 2019. Both these products are shining examples of the amazing success of our local distillers and what they are achieving.

STEP 1: It’s time to register your brand in the Hottest 100 Aussie Spirits

So, here is the first part of our three-part process to register your spirit online. Simply fill in the online survey below between June 1 & June 30, 2022. Once all the nominees are compiled, the trade will have the chance to vote and finally we will host the countdown live at the Indie Spirits Tasting during Sydney Bar Week on Sunday 4^th September at the Potts Point Hotel.

The event will run from June to September. First up, distillers or suppliers must register their brands online (as above). Next, the trade can vote on their favourite bottlings and finally, the top 100 will be announced on Sunday, 4^th September. There are prizes for those who vote as well as for the winning spirits.

The results are in and we’re excited to announce that Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky has taken out the top spot in our inaugural Bartender Magazine Hottest 100 Aussie Spirits Countdown.

This multi-award winning gin from the team at Archie Rose Distilling recently moved to new digs in Botany and Banksmeadow, 4km south of Archie Rose’s original home in Rosebery. The site is one of the most innovative distilleries in the world, designed and constructed from the ground up by founder, Will Edwards, and Master Distiller, Dave Withers. This highly anticipated release of their Single Malt Whisky has won lots of awards and been so popular that it literally flew off the shelves.
