Swillhouse has launched some of the most interesting, top-notch venues this country has ever seen, with Shady Pines Saloon, Baxter Inn, Frankie’s, Restaurant Hubert & Alberto’s Lounge all part of their portfolio. We heard they were doing something new so we were interested. But it’s not what you might expect. The team has decided to publish a magazine. And it sounds excellent.
Edited by one of the best in the business, Myffy Rigby (former editor of the Age and SMH Good Food Guide and Chief Food and Drink editor of Time Out Australia), SWILL is a collection of stories, images and illustrations from the world of food.
“Ever been curious to know what the saddest bar in Portugal is? Where you can drink 50 year old coffee in Ginza? Why more people don’t cook with roosters, or what Tim Rogers orders in a Chinese restaurant? Swill has the answers, all captured within 180 beautifully photographed and illustrated pages.” – Myffy Rigby, Editor SWILL
We asked Myffy what we should expect to read about in this new publication. “Ever been curious to know what the saddest bar in Portugal is? Where you can drink 50 year old coffee in Ginza? Why more people don’t cook with roosters, or what Tim Rogers orders in a Chinese restaurant? Swill has the answers, all captured within 180 beautifully photographed and illustrated pages,” she says.
“Our stories will drop you in a dark bar in New Orleans at four in the afternoon, and after service in a Carlton restaurant at four in the morning,” says Myffy. “A beautiful reminder that there is an electrifying scene out there waiting to be discovered – high to low, near and far, written with a sense of fun and adventure.”
Rigby will spearhead the publication, working with Swillhouse Big Boss Anton Forte and creative director Jordan McDonald. “Just like the venues, this thing’s going to be totally immersive, unique, and hopefully a whole lot of fun to get lost in, too,” says Jordan.
“Swill is my love of art, design, people and hospitality wrapped up in a beautiful magazine,” says Anton. “I’m a lover of print, old books, tattered magazines, and the joy of a new hardcover. There’s something so joyous about words on paper.”
Swill will launch later this year, along with Hubert Talks – a series of events that bring the magazine to life. The publication will be available for purchase from swillhouse.com and in specialty stores around the country. This compendium will start off publishing twice a year and hopefully increase to quarterly once the ball starts rolling.
