Casa Esquina is latest venue from Atticus Hospitality, renowned for such beloved establishments as Paddington’s Tequila Mockingbird and Sydney CBD’s Esteban. Nestled in the iconic corner building on Elliott Street, Casa Esquina breathes new life into the former home of L’Unico and Efendy.

Will & Michael at the BBQ

With a focus on fiery Argentinian fare, led by Head Chef Will Quartel 9previously of Esteban and Tequila Mockingbird) alongside Atticus Hospitality Director Michael Fegent. Their inspiration stems from a three-week culinary odyssey through Argentina, where they immersed themselves in the country’s vibrant culture and culinary traditions. Additionally, they honed their craft amidst the Australian outback, mastering the art of open-flame cooking, often crafting menu delights around a campfire.

Bar Manager Mark Crawford

At the heart of Casa Esquina lies a dynamic open-flame parrilla and a bustling open-plan kitchen, offering patrons an immersive dining experience. Outside, in the expansive leafy courtyard, a BBQ spit awaits, serving up authentic Argentinian street food on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while Sundays feature a custom-built parrilla BBQ, flame-cooking whole beasts like lamb and sucking pig—a culinary spectacle unique to Balmain.

While Casa Esquina’s menu is centred around premium cuts of meats, including Wagyu beef tongue pastrami and kangaroo empanadas, vegetarians will find many options showcasing the diversity of fire-cooked cuisine. From fresh rolled pasta to innovative dishes like black garlic pasta with stracciatella and pecorino, each plate tells a story of culinary exploration and craftsmanship.

Complementing the fare is a thoughtfully curated drinks menu. Head Sommelier Sophie Gitterle delves into the rich tapestry of South American wines, offering an eclectic selection from speciality importers alongside Australian and Spanish varietals.

Fernet Royale

Meanwhile, crafted cocktails by Atticus Group Bar Executive Mark Crawford pay homage to Casa Esquina’s roots, including the iconic Tequila Mockingbird cocktail (a nod to their other venue) and inventive concoctions like the Fernet Royale, a take on Fernet-Branca and Coke (considered Argentina’s national drink). For this one, Fernet is blended with Cynar, another amaro, along with a secret Buenos Aires bitters blend. The finishing touch is a topping of charred wood-infused Coca-Cola foam.

Casa Esquina’s architecture revolves around two majestic camphor laurel trees, evoking the landscapes of Patagonia and the Australian outback. They are also blessed with a charming courtyard and versatile dining spaces, giving guests plenty of options.
